As some of you may know, I am celebrating the one year anniversary of one of my music blogs this weekend. The blog New Music United covers music from the 1920s to the 2010s. Yesterday, I published 10 brand new tracks - some just hours old - as part of the celebration. The next postings will feature music from the last 100 years. This is probably the most amazing blog single I have published so far. Not only does it feature some of the greatest artists in the history of recorded music. It is also a stellar musical recording - of a blues classic - that is accompanied with a special longform video. This is nothing new, you may argue referencing the likes of Kanye West. But this is from 1925! (The film is from 1929). The song features Bessie Smith on vocals, Louis Armstrong - quite possible the most important figure in modern music - on cornet and Fred Longshaw on harmonium. A minimal instrumentation that is more powerful that anything else you will ever hear. The film also features Bessie Smith - in her only movie - as well as dancers, a big band and a gospel choir (sic!), all arranged by the composer of the song W.C. Handy, also known as “the father of the blues”. But wait. There is more. Amazingly, this recording was made on January 14. I am not sure I can ever top this. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.
